6PhyscA
Physics 6A
This Physics learning unit is very similar to a typical non-calculus based first semester, first year, university physics unit. This includes the following topics:
MECHANICS: vectors, kinematics, dynamics, work, energy, power, conservative and non-conservative forces, friction, impulse, momentum, collisions, rotation, rotational dynamics, torque, rotational inertia, rotational energy, angular momentum, static equilibrium, gravitation.
PROPERTIES OF MATTER: elasticity, elastic moduli, hydrostatics, hydrodynamics.
THERMAL PHYSICS: temperature, heat, kinetic theory of gases, thermodynamics, entropy.
In addition to the above mentioned topics the unit also includes the following topics that are typically found in a second semester, first year, university physics unit.
MODERN PHYSICS: atomic structure, the electron, electromagnetic waves, quantum physical phenomena, wave-particle duality
The credit value of this unit has been appropriately loaded to reflect the inclusion of this additional content. This additional material is included here because the balance of the material typically found in a second semester, first year, university physics unit is embedded in other learning units such as Electronics, Capturing Sound and Processing Sound. These topics embedded in other learning units are as follows:
VIBRATIONS AND WAVES: simple harmonic motion, damped oscillations, forced oscillations, resonance, traveling waves, phase velocity, superposition, standing waves, sound waves, sound intensity, Doppler effect, interference, reflection, diffraction, refraction.
ELECTRIC AND MAGNETIC INTERACTIONS: electric charge, electric field, electric potential, current, current density, EMF, resistance, networks, Faraday's law, Coulombs’s Law, Ampere’s law, Gauss’ law, Biot-Savart law, magnetic field, magnetic force, electromagnetic radiation, capacitance, electromagnetic induction, inductance, alternating currents, electric circuits.
