Linear Recording, Synchronisation and Control Systems

This course describes the various historic analogue recording formats.
The theory of magnetic recording is described.
The function of a typical analogue recording deck is described.
Procedures for electronic and mechanical tape machine alignment are discussed.
Various magnetic tape formulations are discussed, particularly in the context of dynamic range, noise, frequency response and the influence of tape type on both electronic and mechanical alignment.
Tape machine and tape care are discussed.
The concepts of synchronisation, speed references, positional references, types and formats of time-code, pull factors and the equipment and methods employed to resolve synchronization of audio and video systems is discussed.

Various control systems are discussed, for example:
Servo systems in tape tension control
Capstan tach and speed comparators
Switching analogue signal paths
Auto-input switching control
